South Texas Moss Project

A comprehensive study
of the identity and distribution of the
mosses in South Texas

                                                                   Bryum argenteum
BRYOPHYTES

This group of organisms, as a whole, has the distinction of having a lifecycle with a dominant gametophyte generation and a reduced sporophytic generation. They all lack vascular tissues making their small size a necessity for survival. All water and nutrients must enter over the surface of the leaves or thallose. The rootlike rhizoids serve only to anchor the organism in place and do not function in the conduction of water or nutrients. All depend on water for fertilization to occur but, sexual reproduction is not necessary for proliferation of the species. All are capable of asexual reproduction by production of either gemmae, rhizoid tubers, bulbils, or by fragmentation.

Bryophytes are divided into three divisions, the Bryophyta (true mosses), Hepatophyta (liverworts) and the Anthocerophyta (hornworts). Mosses can be roughly divided into two groups, either pleurocarpous or acrocarpus. The Hepatophyta can also be divided into two groups based on whether or not the body is thallose or leafy. While there is no confusing the thallose and leafy liverworts, the leafy liverworts are often mistaken for pleucarpous mosses. The Anthocerophyta, when fertile, have a grasslike sporophyte, but when sterile closely resemble a thallose liverwort.

SOUTH TEXAS MOSS PROJECT

The South Texas Moss Project is designed to collect and disseminate data on the presence and distribution of moss species in South Texas. The area treated here as South Texas is that area south of San Antonio and north of the Rio Grande River (Figure 1). A detailed search of the literature has yielded a limited number of bryophytes from most counties in the area but, a few counties have no bryophytes reported.

Counties included in the South Texas region are:
